Important Notice from the American Dream Fund Scholarship Committee
4/24/2026
Last night the American Dream Fund Scholarship Committee had to make a very difficult decision. Regrettably, we must postpone the American Dream Fund Casino de Mayo charity poker tournament. Last year, poker tournaments in Texas came under scrutiny by our Attorney General’s office. To date, they have refused to give a clear opinion and guidance about these events. Knowing this, we carefully planned to clear all the legal hurdles. We consulted both attorneys and local law enforcement to assure that we had dotted every “i” and crossed every “t”.
Recently we learned that the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has begun threatening and/or pulling the licenses of selected businesses who host charity tournaments like ours. In response, large poker houses in Texas are declining to serve alcohol at their events. Small houses are temporarily pausing their licenses so that they may provide alcohol to their players at no cost.
The American Dream Fund refuses to take actions that place our community partners in danger of political retribution in this confusing landscape. It is heartbreaking to know that the Texas state government is standing in the way of our ability to raise funds for our Hood County graduates and curtailing the efforts of many other charitable endeavors across our state.
HOWEVER, WE WILL NOT BE DETERRED. We are searching for an unlicensed venue and plan to provide drinks for free. As soon as this is accomplished we will be back to you with a new date. We will be fully reimbursing all entry fees received.
